Brief History

History

The Faculty of Social and Economics (FISE) at Yogyakarta State University (UNY) is an evolution of the Faculty of Social Sciences (FIS), which was previously known as the Faculty of Social Sciences Education (FPIPS) at the Yogyakarta Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP).

IKIP Yogyakarta was established by the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Sciences (PTIP) No. 55 of 1963 on May 22, 1963. One of its faculties, the Faculty of Social Sciences Teacher Training (FKPS), was officially inaugurated by the Minister of PTIP on May 21, 1964. This decision was further strengthened by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia No. 268 of 1965 on September 14, 1965. To solidify its function in social sciences education, the Rector of IKIP Yogyakarta issued Decree No. 05 of 1965, which included the change of the faculty's name from FKPS to the Faculty of Social Sciences Teacher Training (FKIS).

To emphasize its educational focus, the FKIS was renamed the Faculty of Social Sciences Education (FPIPS) under Presidential Decree No. 54 of 1982 on September 7, 1982, concerning the organizational structure of IKIP Yogyakarta.

In line with the development of science, technology, and art (IPTEKS) and the demands of the professional world, IKIP Yogyakarta was upgraded to Yogyakarta State University (UNY) based on Presidential Decree No. 93 of 1999 on August 4, 1999. This was followed by a change in the names of the university's faculties; the FPIPS became the FIS, which was officially recognized by the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 274/0/1999 regarding the Organization and Governance of UNY. With this name change, the FIS was authorized to offer both teacher training and non-teacher training programs.

Efforts for change and development continued to meet public demand, leading to the proposal to change the name of the FIS to the Faculty of Social and Economics (FISE). Based on the Regulation of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 12 of 2006 regarding the Organization and Governance of Yogyakarta State University, the FIS officially became the Faculty of Social and Economics (FISE).

Based on this institutional history, the UNY FIS Senate established September 14, 1965, as the anniversary of FISE UNY. This date was chosen because it marks the formal legal basis from the Presidential Decree that strengthened and legitimized the establishment of IKIP Yogyakarta.
